Another portrait done with reference from Sktchy. I chose this one for the interesting angle of the head and also the head scarf. I made a mess of the jawline not once but twice, hence the two out of place dark lines – that’s the price I pay for forcing myself to draw directly with pen. (I don’t start with pencil because then I give in to the temptation to make very tentative marks, erase them, make more, etc. … and generally obsess and not enjoy myself. I’ve learnt I’d rather make honest mistakes and live with them – weirdly, I think the art is better this way. More real, perhaps?).
Once again this is pen and watercolour in my 3.5×5.5″ Stillman and Birn Zeta series sketchbook. For a change, rather than scan the photo and edit it in Photoshop, I photographed it with my phone and edited it on the phone. I found it equally difficult to get the colours to look right.
